Rough-toothed dolphin – Steno bredanensis

Here around La Gomera the Rough-Toothed Dolphins have a body size of about 2.1 – 2.6 m; newborns are around 1 m. They like to eat squid, fish and krill.

They have a high dorsal fin in the middle of the back and a brownish skin colour. Their head is distinctive with a long beak which turns into the forehead seamlessly. An eye-catcher is their white or pinkish belly. Rough-Toothed Dolphins are met all year round, though irregularly around La Gomera.

They tend to be rather shy, and appear to have strong social bonds within a group. They swim closely side by side and are the masters of swimming synchronously in formations. Diving intervals last up to 15 minutes.
