Blue whale, Bottlenose dolphins, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Baleen whale, Loggerhead turtle
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Blue whale
- Atlantic spotted dolphin
- Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whales)
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Baleen whale (unidentified)
We’re still revelling in the memory of the moment we encountered a blue whale. A massive, long blow, an even more enormous body that seemed to go on forever, and then, as the grand finale, its tail fin rising out of the water. Simply – WOW!
We were also lucky with the pilot whales, which even showed us their calves once or twice and swam a little closer to the boat. Bottlenose dolphins showed us their powerful bodies, leaping alongside the boat, perhaps to get a closer look at us or simply to shake off pesky parasites.
At the end of the month, we were lucky enough to spot another baleen whale. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to identify it conclusively.
Sightings of other marine animals: Portuguese man-of-war, loggerhead turtle and hammerhead shark
The sighting rate for this period is 90%.
