Sightings from 01.04.26 to 15.04.26

Common dolphin, Bottlenose dolphins, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Baleen whale, Loggerhead turtle

We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:

  • Common dolphin
  • Atlantic spotted dolphin
  • Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whales)
  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Baleen whale (unidentified)

It wasn’t just the weather that showed its varied side. On our tours, too, we encountered an impressive variety of species and some special moments.

The encounters with various baleen whales were breathtaking. Although we couldn’t identify them all with certainty, we are sure about two of them: they were fin whales.
We even saw some of them hunting alongside common dolphins and spotted dolphins – what a spectacle!

The pilot whales were mostly going about their business in a relaxed manner. It was particularly lovely to observe so-called ‘nursery groups’: young animals playing, resting or simply bobbing about on the surface whilst the adults were diving.

A real highlight was provided by two bottlenose dolphins showing off their jumping skills right in front of the boat.
In recent weeks, we have also noted skin infections (some already healed) in a number of bottlenose dolphins – and occasionally in pilot whales as well.

The sighting rate for this period is 94%.
