Bottlenose dolphins, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Humpback whale, Baleen whale, Loggerhead turtle
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Humpback whale
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whale)
- Atlantic spotted dolphin
- Baleen whale (unidentified)
We had many sightings of pilot whale families and their calves. Bottlenose dolphins also crossed our path regularly – sometimes curious and close to the boat, sometimes rather reserved; they simply don’t let themselves be distracted from what they’re doing that easily.
We were able to watch spotted dolphins hunting, accompanied by numerous yellow-billed shearwaters, whilst flying fish fled from the predators out of the water.
The fascinating rough-toothed dolphins also made an appearance, both right next to the boat and whilst hunting.
In early June, we spotted the large blow of a baleen whale. Unfortunately, it was too far away to be clearly identified.
Two weeks later, the next sighting: a humpback whale! It was swimming very close to the coast along the southern side of the island, past Valle Gran Rey heading north or towards La Palma. Who knows…
