The Blainville’s Beaked Whale is different to the Cuvier’s Beaked Whale in size and colour. The body size is about 4.5m, their weight is approximately 1 t.
Males have two huge teeth that look like a massive pair of horns, growing upwards from the lower jaw. Often, these teeth are covered with sea pocks. Their dorsal fin is situated in the last third of the body, and their body colour is blue grey.
They prefer deep waters but sometimes we meet them very close to the coast. They are known to be very shy, with rather quiet behaviour and long diving intervals (20 – 45mins.). They hunt their favourite prey, calamari and squid and fish, at an average depth of 700m, but can dive down to 1500m.
