Bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, Atlantic spotted dolphins, common dolphins, Bryde`s whales, striped dolphins, Cuvier`s beaked whales
In May 2022 we encountered seven different species of whales and dolphins on our responsible whale watching tours off La Gomera.
The following species were observed on our tours in May:
- bottlenose dolphin
- pilot whale
- Atlantic spotted dolphin
- common dolphin
- Bryde`s whale
- striped dolphin
- Cuvier`s beaked whale
In May we were not only spoiled with great sightings of various marine mammals, but also with some tours with a glassy calm sea. We could see the animals far below the water surface and there were great light formations and reflections to witness and capture in photographs.
On 16 May, we encountered a spotted dolphin mother with her dead calf on our afternoon tour. We were able to document the sighting and thus contribute to the research of mourning behaviour in whales and dolphins.
As part of our cooperation with M.E.E.R. e.V., we have been documenting every sighting for years and in May we were again able to add encounters with the rare and rather shy Cuvier’s beaked whales to the sighting database.
