We go to the whales & dolphins every day from Sunday to Thursday Book here!

Sightings from 16.10.24 to 31.10.24

Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Striped dolphins, Loggerhead turtles

We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:

  • Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphins
  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Rough-toothed dolphins
  • Striped dolphins
  • Loggerhead turtle

In October we spent a lot of time with the pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. There were sightings with calm seas and wonderfully relaxed moments. Unfortunately, there was also a shocking sighting. A group of pilot whales was travelling with a young animal that was carrying a rope or something similar wrapped around its body. The dorsal fin of the little one was already deformed and injured from being tied up for so long! It was very upsetting to see him like this. A research and rescue team is looking for the group to free it from this. And we are also keeping an eye out.

Pardela time: More and more young cory shearwaters (formerly yellow-billed shearwaters) can be found floating on the water or in the streets of the village. Many are weakened after their first attempt to fly from their nest to the water. Sometimes their feathers are too wet and they cannot lift themselves into the air and are in danger of drowning. On the road, they cannot lift themselves into the air, or only with difficulty, and are in mortal danger! But it is all the more beautiful when we can marvel at them flying over the waves.

There were also wonderful moments with playful rough-toothed dolphins, spotted dolphins and hunting striped dolphins.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to discover rare birds such as the brown gannet and the osprey by chance.

The sighting rate for the entire month was 90%.
