Striped dolphins, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Loggerhead turtles
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
- Atlantic spotted dolphins
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Striped dolphins
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Loggerhead turtles
We had a surprise guest: We spotted striped dolphins (also known as blue and white dolphins) on a tour. Playful and quick on their feet, we were allowed to keep them company for a few minutes and enjoy the beautiful sight of them.
Rough-toothed dolphins also paid us a visit.
Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins were sometimes more and sometimes less visible. On one tour, the pilot whales were only 1 nautical mile off the coast! They seem to be taking a summer break. Most of the time they were travelling a little faster and didn’t let themselves be diverted from their course. We often saw the bottlenose dolphins near the harbour or further out. They sometimes took a closer look to see who was on the boat.
In addition to the adult animals, we spotted the juveniles of both the bottlenose dolphins and the pilot whales.
There were also lots of playful and curious juveniles among the spotted dolphins, which drifted in the bow wave.
The sighting rate for the whole of August was 90%!
