Rough-toothed dolphins, Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Baleen whale, Loggerhead turtle
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Common dolphin
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whale)
- Atlantic spotted dolphin
- Baleen whale (unidentified)
So many young ones!
During our recent trips, we came across rough-toothed dolphins and even a family of common dolphins with their newborns and calves!
They allowed us to accompany them for a moment, giving us a good look at their little ones. What a treat!
We repeatedly came across the same pod of bottlenose dolphins, usually not far from Valle Gran Rey.
What made them special was that a few of the animals had unusual skin colouring and markings.
Pilot whales were rather rare.
Instead, we often saw spotted dolphins hunting, or curiously and playfully riding the bow wave alongside and in front of the boat.
Twice we were able to see the blow of baleen whales, though unfortunately they were far away. We also spotted whales breaching on the horizon during one trip. Unfortunately, we were unable to identify the species due to the distance.
The sighting rate for the entire period was 80 per cent.
