Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins, Sperm whale
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Sperm Whale
Despite rough seas on many days, we were particularly rewarded on one tour: unfortunately in the distance, but still clearly visible, a sperm whale jumped out of the water. Twice! Then it dived down into the depths with its tail fin outstretched! What a magical moment and after such a long time since we had seen a sperm whale! The memory remains only in our heads.
We saw the small pilot whale, which has a deformed dorsal fin, swimming powerfully through the wild sea with its family. A line was still stretched around his body last November and he had grown up with it for a while. We are so pleased that he has made it through this agonising time, during which he was restricted by rubbish left in the sea. Despite his deformed fin, he seems to be doing well and can continue to grow and thrive! This is especially a benefit for his family, who must have actively supported him at all times and swam by his side.
Special guest: A very special guest came to visit – a large leatherback turtle! Graceful and beautiful! I wonder how old it might be?
Unfortunately, we also found another loggerhead turtle wrapped in plastic.
The sighting rate for this period was 84%.
