Sightings in September 2024

Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Blainville’s beaked whale, Loggerhead turtle

We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:

  • Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphins
  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Rough-toothed dolphins
  • Blainville’s beaked whale
  • Loggerhead turtles

This month we were lucky enough to encounter pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and spotted dolphins several times.
A Blainville’s beaked whale also made an appearance and a group of rough-toothed dolphins dropped by.
The spotted dolphins seemed to want to show us how well they can compete with the pardelas (yellow-billed shearwaters). There was also a young animal with a particularly light-coloured skin.
The bottlenose dolphins showed us that we were also being watched closely on the boat.

We unfortunately (or fortunately) discovered another turtle that had become entangled in rubbish and a weakened pardela. We got them both on the boat and passed them on to the relevant authorities and hope that they will recover and can be released again soon.

The sighting rate for the whole of September was 75%!
