Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, Striped dolphins, Blainville’s beaked whales, Beaked whales, Loggerhead turtles
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Striped dolphins
- Blainville’s beaked whales
- Beaked whales (unidentified)
- Risso’s dolphins
- Loggerhead turtles
2 beaked whale sightings got us off to a good start in November, two groups of 3 animals each. One even included a calf and one group consisted of Blainville’s beaked whales.
Rough-toothed dolphins once again eyed our boat with curiosity and we were even able to observe a small group of Risso’s dolphins.
Social Bottlenose dolphins and roaming Striped dolphins also made us happy on some days.
We were able to spend most of our time with the pilot whales, marvelling at and listening to them resting. The small, constricted pilot whale was sighted a few more times. A rescue team set off in search of him. Unfortunately, the young whale was not seen for a long time until one day a whale-watching boat off Tenerife South spotted the family. The little one had been seen without the line. That was the best news of the day! We will find out more and report on this shortly.
There was also another rescue mission for a turtle – it was entangled in a huge ball of rope that was still attached to a buoy. Fortunately, it was released immediately.
The sighting rate for this period was 99.9%.
