Sightings from 01.10.24 to 15.10.24

Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Striped dolphins, Loggerhead turtles

We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:

  • Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphins
  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Rough-toothed dolphins
  • Striped dolphins
  • Loggerhead turtle

October started with its autumnal mood with more wind and waves. Nevertheless, we were lucky enough to see pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins several times on our trips. There was even a baby among the bottlenose dolphins. The pilot whales also had one, even a newborn and many other young animals. Perhaps this is why they were all rather cautious during our encounters and were careful not to let the curious youngsters swim too close to the boat and kept their babies protected in the centre of the group.

Rough-toothed dolphins once again showed us their playful side when they demonstrated how much fun it is to push a loggerhead turtle around and also showed us their perfect synchronised swimming.

On one tour, striped dolphins surprised us – a large group of perhaps 20-30 animals swam around the boat for a moment, only to suddenly dive back into the depths of the sea.

The sighting rate for this period was 79%!
