Sightings from 01.08.24 to 15.08.24

Pilot whales, Spotted dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Loggerhead turtles

We have recently seen the following species of whales and dolphins on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:

  • Pilot whales (Indian pilot whales)
  • Atlantic spotted dolphins
  • Bottlenose dolphins
  • Loggerhead turtles

We were again lucky enough to encounter more pilot whales. They were mostly rather reserved. The young animals, however, were playful and showed their strength when jumping and turning. The bottlenose dolphins were always close by and kept an eye on us and sometimes seemed to distract us from them. Occasionally, the pilot whales did come closer to the boat and left us mesmerised.
Two animals in particular: one had a white colouring on its head and a piece of squid or similar hanging out of its mouth. What a sight! Another had a shortened dorsal fin. Perhaps cut off by a ship’s propeller.

The spotted dolphins, graceful and curious, swam or jumped towards the boat in waves and then surfed in the bow wave or swam around the boat. What a spectacle!

The sighting rate for this period was 94%!
