Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins, Spotted dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Spermwhale, Beaked whales, Striped dolphins, Blainville’s beaked whales
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whales)
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Atlantic spotted dolphin
- Beaked whales (unidentified)
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Spermwhale
- Striped dolphins
- Blainville’s beaked whales
May was very species-rich! We were very lucky to encounter a sperm whale resting 3 times. They floated on the surface of the water and we could listen to them breathing in and out until they finally dived down and lifted their flukes out of the water.
Playful, curious rough-toothed dolphins accompanied us for a while and examined the boat closely with their echolocation. We could even hear their clicking sounds.
Spotted dolphins also swam at the bow again and showed off their perfect surfing skills.
We encountered several families of bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and also striped dolphins! At one point, they even came a little closer to the boat. We hardly ever see them like this.
On one tour, 4 beaked whales appeared in the distance, unfortunately only briefly.
All the more overwhelming was the encounter with 2 very curious young Blainville’s beaked whales that circled the boat for several minutes. Simply fascinating!
The sighting rate for the entire period was 94%.
