Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins, Spotted dolphins, Rough-toothed dolphins, Cuvier’s beaked whale, Beaked whales, Sperm whales, Loggerhead turtles
In the last 2 weeks we were able to see the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales
- Bottlenose dolphins
- Spotted dolphins
- Rough-toothed dolphins
- Cuvier’s beaked whale
- Beaked whales
- Sperm whales
- Loggerhead turtles
After our short break in September, we have been back at sea since the beginning of the month. The Kalima wind brought us a lot of Sahara dust and heat, so that we sometimes had really unusual temperatures for October, but it also gave us moments with a very special atmosphere.
We were first “welcomed home” by the pilot whales, and we were delighted to finally see them again! On day 2, the guests and we were then surprised with a very special tour: spotted dolphins and rough-toothed dolphins on one tour! And sometimes it was the case that some of them darted to the right of the boat and the others to the left! You really don’t see that often…
And a week later, another 10 guests had booked the “lucky mushroom tour”: good-humored, sociable bottlenose dolphins, a Cuvier’s beaked whale (which, in typical beaked whale fashion, only appeared briefly and then disappeared again, so that some guests saw it and others didn’t), and a 14-16m long sperm whale bull that could be admired up close for a while – all this in one tour is simply incredible!
And then there was the little squid that – probably fleeing from a hungry fish or marine mammal – just hopped onto the boat! After everyone had had a look at it, we of course returned it to the sea – hopefully the air (or water) was clear again by now!
