Pilot whales, Bottlenose dolphins
We have recently seen the following whale and dolphin species on our whale watching tours off La Gomera:
- Pilot whales (Short-finned pilot whales)
- Bottlenose dolphins
During the last trips, pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins were sighted. Winter has a firm grip on the region and harsh weather conditions are common. This made the presence of the animals all the more remarkable, which delighted us despite the adverse conditions – or perhaps because of them.
Curious young pilot whales approached the boat and inspected it from a short distance. We also observed the occasional spyhop by pilot whales, which made it clear that we were also being watched by curious eyes. It was often possible to listen to their vocalisations and perceive their communication.
The bottlenose dolphins always stayed close to the pilot whale families. They kept a close eye on the boat, occasionally tried to attract attention and impressed us with powerful jumps and clearly playful behaviour.
The sighting rate for this period is 100%.
