BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN – TURSIOPS TRUNCATUS

The powerful Bottlenose dolphin can measure up to 3-4m, the calves being born after a 12-months’ gestation time with already 0.90 – 1.3 m. They are toothed whales (Odontoceti) and feed on fish, shellfish, octopus and squid. Their attitude towards boats can range from complete indifference to enthusiastic interaction (bow riding). The average life expectancy of a Bottlenose dolphin is more than 30 years, but reproduction only starts at the age of 9-10 years (females) and 10-13 years (males).
